It has taken us a rather long time for a minor release, but most of the developers have been rather busy with mentoring students for the “Google Summer of Code 2013”. On the other hand, we had many contributions from new developers: Dawid Gan tirelessly fixed bugs, making 0.8.1 the minor release with most bug fixes. Johannesr1 added shield functionality to bubblegum. Xenux added filtering of add-ons, Glenn De Jonghe saving of a Grand Prix (just abort a Grand Prix at the beginning of a race, later then restart the same Grand Prix again). Funto and Mohammad Al-Ghannam added a multi-player soccer mode.

You can get the new release from our download page for Windows Vista and newer, MacOSX 10.6 and newer (Intel architecture), and Linux (32-bit and 64-bit Intel/AMD architectures). Windows XP version will follow soon.

We hope you enjoy the new release, and as always we welcome new artists and programmers to join us, either through our forum or our mailing list. Also, you can follow us at Twitter @supertuxkart.

With SuperTuxKart 0.8.1 you can race roaringly rapid or roam ridiculously 'round, whatever you want!

    1. The tar package already has the executable binary, you don't need to compile/install it. So it doesn't really matter.

  7. Deinstall after 10 minutes. New version is rubbish!

    1. Isn't it nice that you are entitled to your opinion? Equally nice is it that we are entitled to ignore it, especially considered the non-constructiveness of your feedback.
But I digress. You can still download previous versions - even TuxKart if that strikes your fancy.

    2. Play the 0.8 version and play this big shit - would you say the 0.8.1 is better?
      STK Enterpris is shit.
The "new" Old Mine is much too dark.
The bombs and "balls" have no sound when explore.
Speedometer only take view and need nobody.
Only the new nitro models are positiv.
This is another example how updates makes a good program to shit.

    4. This is a development release, so don't expect everything to be perfect. Actually, I liked the old speedometer, but the progress is wonderful, I like the way they work on this. STK Enterprise could be downloaded in the former version too, it just got part of this release. So don't understand the problem. I must say, the Lighthouse track got awesome.

    5. STK Enterprise is much better than Startrack which was kicked out - personally I like it.

New Old Mine is too dark, that's true ;p

No sound with bombs??? I fixed some bugs with sounds in 0.8.1. If you really have problem with sounds, please report a bug.

Speedometer is reeeeally minor thing - do you look at this at all? ;p

      ...

And what do you think about:
      - new Lighthouse
      - new Zen Garden
      - bubblegum shield
      - Soccer Mode? :P

  8. @ anonymous 3 post before
You have too munch "shit's" in your Post. Call them bugs and pass the informations to the development team so they can fix them.
By the way I think the new release is the best ever!

  10. is it possible to update 0.8 to 0.8.1 or will i lose everything (like when i updated from 0.7.something to 0.8)?

  11. Hello. I know it's not an official track, but I noticed something with Mystic Island. At the end of the part which looks like a downlaid 8, computer players slow down and group themselves, a few karts move in a row just one after another. After they get through the pillar, they again behave like normal, try to get ahead and attack each other. It may be some kind of bug with the AI.

    1. Haven't you seen the yellow flags? ;)

  12. Lighthouse track is now a lot harder, as the AI finally finds the back straight :) And I like the new atmosphere in the Old Mine.

Are the small nitros now even smaller, or am I seeing ghosts?

  13. a nice add to a future version would be custom grandprix. Currently i'm doing it manually, can you add addons track to a grandprix?

  14. Hey guys! When did you add a Christmas present??? I am seeing every racer with a red cap. Go Santa Tux. :)

  15. *sigh* This game keeps getting worse with every thing you *re*work. Just like everything else in life. If it works - don't dare touching it!

    1. Funny thing you say that, since we have been "reworking" the game since SuperTuxKart 0.3. I suggest to go back to TuxKart if you don't want us to have anything to do with it.

    2. Well, I can't rightfully judge improving game, but you repeatedly fix things not broken, like bubblegum/glove being turned into a weird gimmick now, and the new interface. I'd complain about the whole "overworld" thing being unavoidable, too, but to each their all. Same about old tracks getting removed and revamped, like the pyramid one.

Guess I should just find myself a download of .6 or which was right before the overworld?

    3. Bubblegum is now a shield, I don't see the weird gimmick with that? Not sure what you mean with "glove", and not really sure about what you mean with the new interface, it has not changed a whole lot in the most recent releases.

The overworld was introduced in 0.8 if I am not mistaken, and mainly to replace the rather crowded challenges menu we had before - going to a version with no challenges at all would be quite a long time ago really.

When it comes to older versions of tracks and karts, we have user-submitted add-ons for that.

I am not saying everything is perfect now, there is certainly room for improvements, but when people just say "I liked the old thing better" that doesn't help us a whole lot. Rather try to come with convincing arguments why some older mechanic was better, or other ways we can improve the current one. But please understand we cannot always make everyone happy or the game would feel very schizophrenic.
